Last month I entered my first photographic competition. It was a big one, the Maggie Diaz Photography Prize for Women. I submitted one photograph, entries must be your own of course and should only use the natural light available, i.e. no flash. Post production was allowed, but not looked at highly. So, in keeping with my new years resolution, putting myself out there, outside the box of my ordinary realm I entered the image that I believed honoured the legendary photographer. But, and there’s a but, I didn’t get in as a finalist. Oh well. I wasn’t surprised but I was putting my hopes up. Next time. There’s a next time.
I also purchased my first studio lighting kit. Not the best and biggest one, but it’s a good start to begin the one thing I fear in photography…those damn studio lights and it’s bracketing, it’s mathematical requirements to calculate angles, temperature, lengths to the subject, oh god it’s so daunting. So, I practised the first night and stuck my kids in front of them, this is the outcome… Not bad, but so much more to learn. That’s what makes photography so wonderful and challenging. It’s never a dull moment if I keep myself outside the box. Keep posted for more progress updates.
