My January Photo a Day Project 2016
In January I participated in a photo a day for the month of January along side many photographers and shared my photos with my facebook, instagram and twitter followers. The photos were going to be about my family, my loved ones as we journey into the new year together. It was a little project I wanted to start to challenge myself with my black and white photography and to also challenge my commitment to the project. A photo per day was a lot to ask for when I have a husband, threee young children and the responsibilities that go with that and of course my own business’ commitment meant I was delving into this thinking creatively. What I did get from this was not only all of what I’ve just mentioned, but so much more time finding meaningful moments with my children which is really the best thing, priceless even. So, thank you to everyone who gave me so much positive and encouraging feedback through this project. I couldn’t have asked for a better audience. I am forever grateful and humbled. x
Day One. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
This month I’m going to join the world of pro photographers by sharing one photo a day for the month of January. These images will be of my loves as I spend this time absorbing every little thing about them before this year spins us all out once again. I hope you enjoy and I’d love to see yours too.
Day Two. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
My little Miss 3. She thinks she’s invincible in the water.
Me, I am constantly on edge.
Day Three. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
Before Christmas, my eldest asked me to buy him a lined notebook with a black hard cover – yes, that specific. He’s been writing in it all holidays, every morning we read his latest story. The last one is titled ‘The Wonder Boy’.
Day Four. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
There’s a lot going on in this photo. Besides my pot steaming on the stove, my hubby and the kids enjoyed an afternoon of making masks. The Husband is the most serious of us all.
Day Five. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
My Miss 5 clearly using the force.
Day Six. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
My last three days has been spent in an impromptu getaway at my in laws, so it’s only fitting to dedicate the three days I’ve missed sharing my photo a day to them. This is Marley, their rescue rabbit who was very adored by the girls.
Day Seven. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
Our 13 year old niece, Lucy and her border collie, Archie with my two girls. I woke up in the middle of the night with Scarlett coaxing Archie to our bed. The girls look very tired after going to sleep well past their bed times the night before, but it’s memories they’ll remember forever.
Day Eight. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
Our last day with the ‘other’ Walkers was spent celebrating my Brother in law’s birthday and their wedding anniversary. It had been such a long time since we spent nights and days together. The kids screamed out the car windows that they didn’t want to part and that is such a cherished and integral part about childhood, making fun memories with your cousins.
Day Nine. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
Our most trusted and loyal member of our family. We love him so.
Day Ten. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
More cousin love today with two out of three of my brothers visiting us today and this one was my fave because ummm… TWINS!
Day Eleven. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
Today I woke up with a killer headache and really couldn’t think of anything better than just sitting at home doing nothing. Of course, as a Mum, you can’t just sit around. Besides parent duties and household chores, I answered emails, created a client gallery, sent out quotes and submitted photographs for a photographic competition. In amidst all of my paid work, I watched my 3 year old play with one of her favourite toys, the cars. I love listening to the car sounds she makes and driving them around furnitures and floors and walls. These are simple and happy moments right here.
Day Twelve. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
I was talking to my daughter about her upcoming birthday and that this year we won’t be having a party with her friends (mainly because I haven’t found the energy to organise) but then she became silent. Her face saddened by what I had just said to her. She couldn’t understand why and this my friends, is why you’ll be receiving a message from me about her birthday party. How could I simply have continued to say no to her?
Day Thirteen. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
I never want to forget what it was like to have these little feet on my bed, these little beings depending everything on me. Each birthday passes and they grow before my eyes. It’s beautiful and heart wrenching all at once. I wish that every single day their feet will carry them on a peaceful and happy journey and no doubt their feet will travel on paths that are rocky and tough, but life isn’t about avoiding the bruises, it’s about collecting the scars to prove we showed up for it, so I’m hoping that what I’m showing them every day will allow them to rise. x
Day Fourteen. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
When the summer rain comes in and the only thing your kid wants to do is find that one muddy puddle to jump in.
Of course she found it and she jumped into it with joy.
Day Fifteen. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
All the Friday feels.
Sometimes, they can be this charming.
Sometimes, it lasts as fleeting as it comes.
They say never work with children and animals.…
Day Sixteen. JANUARY 2016 PHOTO A DAY.
How good are trampolines?
My favourite childhood memories are made from having near death experience on them, or laying down, staring at the cloud formations, listening to the whispering winds and talking non stop about that boy we had a crush on. Playing games which test how high we can jump without breaking our bones and colliding with each other. How good is it to just laugh and laugh on one all day long. How good are trampolines?
Day Seventeen. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY. Please excuse the phone photo, I completely forgot my camera just as we reached our visit to the Melbourne Zoo today. I had to use my phone to capture this moment this sweet Orangutan sat by the window next to my Scarlett.
Day Eighteen. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
It was in her Fathers’ arms she found solace. She is quiet, safe and still in her Fathers’ arms. She fits perfectly. All of them do.
Day Nineteen. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
Today my almost six year old made honey joys for her little play date she’s having tomorrow. She’s also deemed it good enough to call it her birthday party with her friends. I keep telling her there’s only three friends coming over for a play just so that she’s not expecting some epic piniata bursting, balloon popping party
Day Twenty. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
Today, we immensely enjoyed our friends visiting us, we spoke about how bitter sweet some of us feel to have our last babies start school next week. These little kids are testing how high, fast, long they can keep up with each other. I want to tell them to slow down. But, I think this generation is something else or is that I’m now a Mum and I’m terrified of how much or little hold I have of them even at this age? Just don’t tell them I just said that
Day Twenty One. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
Scarlett and Moses have a wonderful bond. I know she really loves him when she tells me she will miss him when we say goodnight.
Day Twenty Two. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
It’s my husbands only day off this week so he wanted to do whatever Madeleine wanted to do the day before her birthday. So, off to the Werribee Open Range Zoo we went in the pouring rain. But it was actually comforting and moderately stress free. The animals weren’t hiding from the rain and the safari ride is always our favourite, but the best treat was seeing the three month old lion cubs, the first to be born at a Victorian zoo in fifteen years. Also, did you know hippos produce pink milk?! Getting time and space to read the animal facts was a treat too. hahaha.
We love this zoo.
Day Twenty Three. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
Her day has arrived. Six Years Old. She didn’t even ask me what her birthday present was. I’m so lucky to be her Mum, she is surprising and though she will deliver the most dramatic eye roll when I ask her to do something, she is usually the first one to brush her teeth or make her bed. She has endless questions, my most favourite of them all is “How do we stop our brain from thinking?” She is quirky, imaginative and can play with her toys to make every cent worth it. She is my Madeleine Ruby. Six years my love and light, really. X
Day Twenty Four. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
Cousins are our first best friends we make and most likely the ones that last the longest.
Day Twenty Five. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
We found these two cousins sitting like their Dads, looking like they’re deep into a meaningful discussion, but as I walked closer, all I heard was talk about dog farts
Day Twenty Six. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
Today is Australia Day. I knew this. I also knew going into the city today we should’ve joined in some kind of celebration, but didn’t even think to see what time the Australia Day parade would be on or check to see if there was anything interesting going on down the Yarra. Instead, today, my husband worked, I took the kids to the city and we ate sushi and played at the Flagstaff Gardens playground. Only now when I’m looking at this photo that I realised I didn’t even make my kids aware it’s Australia Day today. I asked my Master 9 if he knew what today was and he said “yeah” and when I asked him if we should have done something more exciting today, he replied “nah”. Yep.
Day Twenty Seven. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
I love watching my son be a magnet to other little kids, boys and girls. They flock to him, always intrigued and always laughing at his antics which he does intentionally to make them laugh.
He’s playing his NBA game on the ipad here and two of my bestie’s sons rest themselves on him. Little Oliver says “Is that you Hudson? When you’re older?” Hudson’s reply, “Yes, it’s me. I play for the Chicago Bulls.” And they believed him
Day Twenty Eight. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
My Miss 3 had her first day at kindergarten today. The last of the three kids to go through. We love our local pre school and this kid better be as great as her older brother and sister were. Sounds terrible that I said that, but this kid is something. She screamed and cried when she couldn’t go outside at that particular point, but I think I quickly distinguished her anger before anyone noticed. I hope so anyway. She makes me nervous. Like really nervous.
Day Twenty Nine. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
The day has come when my side kick, right hand girl started her first day of Prep today. I held it together, she was keen as mustard, excited and gorgeous. But, it was this moment right here when Scarlett said goodbye to her big sister that just tore at my heart strings. Needless to say Maddie had a great day and Scarlett and I couldn’t wait to pick her and her big brother up from school.
Day Thirty. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
We’re all back in the swing of things this week. The first bball game of season was spectacular. We were so proud of our little man and the team. I love watching him play, loving it and improving every week. Go Hurricanes!
Day Thirty One. JANUARY PHOTO A DAY.
I spent a great deal of this afternoon taking self portraits because I wanted to show you the importance of existing in your photos. I was taking photos of myself with my first Mamiya Camera which I thought expressed who I was as a person. This was the last photo taken from today when my kids and husband watched me take gazillion photos of myself which I of course detested, I realised then that they were all here in one room together, “Let’s have a family photo” I excitedly suggested and they happily for once obliged. I love photography for this reason, to snap moments, capture emotion and document the life we are living. So please join in your family photos and exist next to your loved ones because sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.
And this one is me. I’m a Mother and a Wife. I’m a doer, a terrible singer, a wannabe dancer and just trying to do and make the best of every day even if it means making a fool of myself, that’s okay. x
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ENJOYING THE MONTH OF JANUARY WITH ME! xo
